Common questions about certification fees.
How long does certification take from enrolment to certificate?
Timeline depends on the certificate level. Foundation typically takes 14 weeks from enrolment to assessment, Professional 20 weeks, and Advanced 32 weeks. These include self-paced study, portfolio preparation, and scheduled assessment slots. Most candidates working part-time alongside their current role complete on time. The programs are designed for working professionals, not full-time students.
What happens if a candidate doesn't pass the assessment?
Candidates who do not reach the 70% pass mark on their first assessment are eligible for one resit attempt. The resit is typically scheduled 4–6 weeks after the initial attempt to allow additional preparation time. Resit fees apply. Contact us for the current resit fee schedule. If a candidate does not pass on resit, we work with the firm and candidate to identify the specific gaps before recommending further study.
Is the AEC Labs certificate portable? Does it stay with the candidate if they change employer?
Yes. Certificates are issued to the individual, not the firm. If a certified staff member moves to a new employer, their certificate remains valid and verifiable at aeclabs.com.au/validate. The certificate code and registry listing stay with them. This is by design: the credential represents what the individual has demonstrated, independent of who is currently employing them. Firms investing in bulk packages certify their current team and also build a verified track record that follows those individuals throughout their careers.
Do AEC Labs certificates expire? What does renewal involve?
Yes. All AEC Labs certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Renewal is lighter than the original assessment: candidates complete a short currency check (updated standards, any significant regulatory changes, and a brief practical review) rather than repeating the full program. Renewal fees are set below the initial certification fee. The 3-year cycle exists because Australian building codes, BIM standards, and Revit workflows evolve. The expiry date on a certificate tells a firm that the knowledge has been reconfirmed recently, not just at some point in the past.
Can a firm pay for certification on behalf of their offshore staff?
Yes, and this is the most common arrangement. The firm receives a single invoice (or a bulk package invoice), handles payment, and the candidate is enrolled and assessed in their name. The resulting certificate is issued to the individual candidate regardless of who paid. For bulk and enterprise packages this is the default billing model. Individual firms nominating one or two staff can also pay directly. Use the contact form and select "Nominate a Staff Member" as the subject.
